Vocations Ministry

“God, what do you want me to do with my life?”

The St. Dorothy Vocation Ministry exists to foster vocations to the priesthood, religious, and married life within our community. We desire to develop a culture in our parish where people are assessing what God wants them to do with their life.

Goals and objectives:

  • Help our parish families raise Catholic children so that the groundwork can be laid for vocations to marriage, priesthood, and consecrated life.
  • Encourage parishioners to make praying for vocations a part of their daily prayer life.

What is a “vocation”?

“The word ‘vocation’ is derived from the Latin word ‘vocare’ which means a calling or summoning. A vocation is God’s invitation to love and serve him and his Church in a particular state or way of life, leading to holiness. The Church recognizes the vocations of married, religious, and priestly life.”

Across the country, and in our own archdiocese, large numbers of priests are reaching retirement age.  With low seminary numbers, we are far below the replacement level needed.  As Catholics, we believe the Lord has never stopped calling men to work in his vineyard.  That same calling is still there, but it seems that we don’t hear God’s call anymore.  The future of our Church depends on the presence of a holy priesthood.  Please join with us to foster vocations through families that live their faith on a daily basis, through daily prayer on the part of all parishioners, and by nurturing vocations in our youth and young adults.

Things that we at St. Dorothy have already begun to do to encourage vocations:

  • We have a 24/7 Adoration Chapel that was recently rededicated for vocations.
  • We have a Vocation Prayer in our weekly bulletin.
  • We pray for vocations at each Mass during the Prayer of the Faithful.
  • We pray a Vocation Prayer as a community at the end of daily Mass.

Prayer is the most important foundation of our work to promote vocations.

We ask that you make vocations to the priesthood and religious life part of your private prayer every day.
